Splitting Axes

Splitting Axes are, as the name suggests, made to split wood. The axes have a large and heavy head that is forged and ground into a concave shape with a relatively thin edge. The axes are made to chop along the grain of the wood fibres, in contrast to Forest Axes, which are made to cut across the grain of the wood fibres. The concave shape of the Splitting Axes ensures that the edge goes quickly and easily into the wood and then effectively splits it as the broader section pushes apart the wood. Its unique design also means that the axe head does not stick as easily in the wood, as would happen with a slimmer axe head.

When splitting wood, the handle is put under great strain at the axe head, as the handle can easily hit the log being split. All Gränsfors Splitting Axes therefore come with a metal collar to protect the handle. The handle is also grooved towards the end for an extra firm grip.

All Splitting Axes come with a sheath of vegetable-tanned leather and a copy of The Axe

  • The handle on Gränsfors Bruk’s axes was designed by Hans Erik Persson. Old traditions have been embraced and adapted to the demands of today’s users. The ergonomic shape provides a steady, comfortable grip on the handle, even at arm’s length. Gränsfors Bruk’s handle is made from hickory, the perfect wood because it is both strong and flexible, with long, parallel fibres. This increases the life of the handle and thus helps reduce consumption of nature’s resources.

The wood is dried before turning. This is so that the wood will not dry out any further and shrink, once the axe head has been set on the handle. One of the most common causes of an axe head coming loose from its handle is that a green, undried handle has been used, which then dries out, shrinks and comes loose.

In order to further improve the quality of the handle, it is soaked in hot linseed oil. The handle is then treated with beeswax to make it more resistant to dirt and water.
